The Scottish Terrier is a hardy dog whose origin can be traced to the old sandy-coloured Cairn Terrier (see No. 30 of this series). The present type, evolved in Scotland by skilful breeding, was considered an improvement sufficient to justify changing the name to the Scottish Terrier. Over a century ago this dog was known as an Aberdeen Terrier, a name that is still used by some owners. Like its ancestors it is a short-bodied rough-coated little animal, very active and a great fighter. It is affectionate and an excellent house-dog.

As a show dog the "Scottie" dates from the late seventies of the last century, when he attained a popularity which he has never lost. He hails from the Scottish Highlands, and was sometimes known as the Aberdeen Terrier. The Scottie is game and attractive, and makes an ideal house dog, for he is devoted to his master and his master's household and to them alone. He has a low, strong and compact body, 9 to 13 inches in height, and he weighs from 15 to 20 lbs. The best colours are steel grey, black brindle, brown brindle, black or sandy.
