The Schipperke comes from Belgium where it is used as a watch-dog on the barges, being specially bred for this purpose. It is not, as is sometimes thought, a tail-less breed, but the tail is removed soon after birth to prevent it getting in the way when the dog is at work. One curious point about the breed is that the mane starts from below the shoulder and finishes behind the ears. The first specimen was brought to England in the latter part of the 19th century.
