The Papillon is one of the smallest of dogs, and certainly one of the prettiest. His large prick ears, and his dainty manners make his name a very appropriate one. The more normal form of his nose and eyes as compared with the Pekingese, Pug-dog, Japanese or King Charles Spaniel make him a welcome recruit to the ranks of toy dogs. He originates from Spain, and may be related to the tiny Chihuahuas of Mexico.

1931

The Papillon or Butterfly Dog is one of the more recent canine importations into England. About the middle of the 17th century dogs of this breed were great favourites at the court of the Kings of France. There are two varieties, the drop-eared and erect-eared. The white blaze down the centre of the face, together with the prick ears, give the dog a certain resenblance to a butterfly. Colours: brown, ruby, light brown, dark yellow, black with coloured patches.
Maximum height: 12 in.
Maximum weight: 12 lb., but the smaller the better.
