Here is a very fine old breed of hound much in need of a little more attention from the breeders. Indeed, where many packs of them existed before, it has become quite difficult to find genuine individuals now. As might be expected from their thick oily coats, they are excellent water dogs. The colour varies widely from blue and white to grizzle, fawn or black and tan, and they stand about twenty-five inches at the shoulder.
1938 DOGS - SECOND SERIES OF 48 No 21 ISSUED BY GALLAHER

This fine English hound finds his origin in the old Southern Hound or Vendee Hound, and a cross with the old Water Spaniel probably supplied his rough coat and gave him increased aptitude for swimming. He is used in packs to hunt the otter. The Otterhound much resembles the Bloodhound, with the exception of coat, and he should be perfect in symmetry, strongly built, hard and enduring, with unfailing powers of scent. The colours are generally grizzle or sandy, with black and tan more or less clearly defined.

It is generally believed that this breed is descended from the old Southern or Vendee hound, crossed with the Water Spaniel, and derives from the latter its rough coat and its valuable qualities as a worker in the water. He has wonderful powers of scent and is a large, strongly-built hound, as indeed he needs to be, for his quarry the otter is one of the most powerful and wary of British wild animals, Otterhounds are grizze or sandy, with well defined markings of black and tan.
1929 DOGS HEADS - No 19 in a series of 50, issued by Players

This hound is descended from the old Southern or Vendee Hound, and shows kinship with the Bloodhound. A cross with the old Water Spaniel probably supplied his shaggy coat and gave him increased aptitude for swimming. The modern Otterhound may be said to combine the qualities of the true Otterhound and the Foxhound. Few packs are made up of Otterhounds only, Staghounds, Harriers and crossbreds being often included; the Bucks and Dumfries packs, however, are exceptions. The Otterhound should be strongly built, hard and enduring, with unfailing powers of scent. Colours: grizzle or sandy, with black and tan clearly defined. Height: about 26 in. Weight: 90-95 lb.
