
Though no doubt exceeded in antiquity by certain oriental breeds, the Maltese is reckoned the oldest toy dog in Europe, as it dates back some centuries B.C. Their remarkable appearance should certainly make them an unmistakable breed, and they have changed little with the years. They are not necessarily white as shown here, but they should be self-coloured. The smaller the dog (down to 4-lb.) and the longer the hair, the better.
