Smooth Fox Terrier

Smooth Fox Terrier - vintage picture
1931

This popular and typically English dog, the gentleman of the Terrier world, is endowed with a lively temperament, which endears him to his owner. There are two varieties, the smooth-coated and Wire-haired, and the breed as it is now known dates from about the fifties of the last century; he was originally bred to unearth the fox. Colours: white should predominate, brindle, red or liver markings are objectionable; tan and black markings are usual and it matters not where the markings are. Height: 14 in. Weight: 18 lb.

The Wire Fox Terrier

The Wire Fox Terrier is intelligent, attractive, affectionate and a good guard, is probably the most popular of terriers with town-dwellers. It is ideal for small house or flat, costs little to keep and is full of fun and vitality. Its evolution to the present type from the old Cairn Terrier must have been gradual as there now seems to be little similarity between the two. The same tendencies, however, are exhibited, especially that of hunting and as its name suggests, it was at one time used for fox hunting.

The Smooth Fox Terrier

The Smooth Fox Terrier is closely related to the Wire Fox Terrier. It has been termed "the perfect little gentleman of the Terrier world, " is as sharp as a needle, aristocratic in stance and general deportment, and has an expression that is fully alive. Its energy is as tireless as its tail, which seems to wag unceasingly from morn to night. Most " Smooths " are tan and white or blark and white, with white predominating.

Wire Haired Fox Terrier

1931

The Wire-haired Fox Terrier is a cousin of the Smooth-coated variety, and, except for the coat, the accepted standard of points of the two varieties is identical. The two kinds are often interbred, litters sometimes including representatives of both. The Wire-haired Fox Terrier should have a sharp, alert expression, V-shaped ears, dark eyes, a long head and strong fore-face. His coat should be hard, wiry and harsh to the touch; silky or woolly hair is a great fault.
Colours: white should predominate, with black or tan markings; liver, brindle, or blue markings are objectionable.
Height: 14 in. Weight: 18 lb.

Smooth Fox Terriers

Smooth Fox Terriers - vintage picture

This popular breed may be described as the "gentleman" of the Terrier world, endowed with a lively temperament which endears them to their owners. Fox-Terriers cannot claim an ancient lineage, the starting point of the modern breed dating from about the fifties of last century; but they certainly make up in "sauce" what they lack in pride of ancestry. The Smooth-haired Terrier has a short, harsh, and flat coat, in which white predominates. Tan and black markings are usual, but brown or liver markings are objectionable. Height 14 ins. Weight about 18 lbs.
