One of the typically British breeds, the Flat-Coated Retrievers were the most popular on the show bench at the end of the century. In those days, more than one dog made well over £1,000 by his services at stud alone, an impressive figure even for to-day. The breed was originally known as the ' Wavy-coated, but now the coat is fine in texture and flat. His nature is friendly and intelligent, while in the field he is a swift and tireless worker.

The flat-coated Retriever is a modern production, and said to have sprung from the Labrador dog and the old English Black Setter. His utility with the gun is much appreciated by sportsmen, but of late years he has been somewhat overshadowed by his cousin the Labrador Retriever. In make and shape he differs little from the Curly-coated variety. His coat should be Hat, the outer coat harsh, with a dense undercoat. He was once known as the Wavy-coated Retriever, but the "wave" is now severely discouraged. Colour black. Height at shoulder 24 ins. Weight 65 to 75 lbs.

The Flat-coated Retriever was probably evolved from the Labrador Retriever and the old English Black Setter. He is, perhaps, less popular than the Labrador Retriever, but his utility with the gun is much appreciated by sportsmen. He should be a bright, active dog, with intelligent expression, showing power without lumber, and raciness without weedincss. His head should be long and he should have strong bone and muscular quarters, with a short straight tail carried gaily. His coat should be flat, the outer coat harsh, with a dense undercoat. Colours: black or liver, whole coloured.
