The Curly-coated is the rarest of retrievers and is a great water dog, being as happy in the water as on land. He is typical in shape and temperament, and is considered by some authorities to be the original Retriever stock. The race is renowned for its friendliness and intelligence, and before any Retriever can prefix his name with 'Champion' he must pass a field trial, to ensure that he is not merely a show specimen.
1938 DOGS - SECOND SERIES OF 48 No 47 ISSUED BY GALLAHER

As his name implies, this dog is specially bred and trained to find and bring in game shot by his master. The Curly-coated Retriever is usually considered to be of earlier origin than the flat-coated variety, the quality of the coat playing an important part in estimating his value. The close-fitting "nigger curl" is most highly valued. Tail and legs should be as evenly covered as the body. Good liver-coloured dogs are sometimes seen, but generally speaking the black are more common. Height about 2 feet. Weight 65 to 75 lbs.
