The Clumber Spaniel, the largest of the Spaniel types, has been known for more than 150 years and was originally kept at Clumber, Nottingham, by the Duke of Newcastle. Its evolution is possibly the result of breeding between an Alpine Spaniel and a Basset Hound, as the best points of each are present in the Clumber. The breed has been particularly favoured by Royalty and his late Majesty King George V kept a fine string of Clumbers which were exhibited at many Dog Shows.

The name Clumber was no doubt taken from the historic seat of the Dukes of Newcastle, where dogs of this breed were reared from French Spaniels brought over by the Duc de Noailles. It seems probable that the old Blenheim Spaniel helped to form this magnificent sporting and show dog. The Clamber is a sure and reliable game finder, with a characteristic swinging gait. His build is heavy, square and massive, and his dark amber eyes have a thoughtful expression. As regards colour, a white body with slight bead harkings is considered especially desirable.
