Believed to have been known to the Assyrians before the Stone Age, the Mastiff is certainly one of the oldest breeds in the worldand was brought to England by the Romans. It is somewhat similar to the Great Dane but has a heavier body and a thicker type of head. The Bull Mastiff appears to have been evolved by breeding he original Mastiff with a Bulldog in order to get stronger jaws, the dog being used for guarding and bull-baiting. The present type is faithful and intelligent, of reddish-fawn colour with black ear tips and muzzle.
