The German Boxer, as he is usually called, is a powerful and fierce-looking dog, often used by police on the Continent in criminal work. He has long been established as a separate breed, but he is known to be descended from strains of the Mastiff and Great Dane, though rather smaller in stature than either. Despite his appearance, which is accentuated by his crop ears, he is very affectionate towards his human friends.
